 What is a Picture Mat?

A picture mat is a cardboard-like material which is placed between a frame and your photo, art or document to separate it from the glass or plastic and also to give a more decorative and finished look.  

Mats (sometimes referred to as mattes) come in 2 thicknesses -

4 PLY (1/16" thick) -this is the most common

8 PLY (1/8" thick) 

A mat is composed of:

A top colored and sometimes textured paper

A core-either white, cream or colored core

A white backing paper
